AOS Product Questions

• Question Answer AOS - 2015+ Subaru WRX Air Oil Separator - After Install Passenger Window Issue
  If you leave the ECU/battery unplugged you may have to reset the switches.
  
  If the vehicle's battery is disconnected due to situations such as battery or fuse replacement, the following functions are deactivated:
  

  • One-touch auto up/down function
  • Anti-entrapment function

  
  
  Follow the steps below to reactivate functions:
  1. Close the driver's door.
  
  2. Turn the ignition switch to the "ON" position.
  
  3. Open the driver's side window halfway by pushing down the power window switch.
  
  4. Pull up the power window switch and close the window completely. Continue pulling up the switch for approximately 1 second after the window is closed completely.

  Answer:
  We do not make an AOS specifically for the 2.0L vehicles. You can purchase one for a 2006-07 WRX and relocate your cruise control. Additionally, the 2002-2003 WRX features a PCV nipple on the throttle body that also houses the PCV valve. This differs from 2004-07 STI’s, as they simply use a valve-less nipple at the same location.

• Question Answer AOS - My V2 AOS appears to be leaking around the top or bottom, but I can't find an actual leak. What's causing this?

  Don't be alarmed! We have found is that in some cases the lubrication we use on the o-rings during assembly of the AOS can liquefy under higher engine bay temperatures. The first step to determine the cause of the leak will be to use a citrus-based cleaner to clean off the residue and monitor to see if it comes back. • Question Answer AOS - Trouble Installing an IAG Air Oil Separator with Aftermarket Turbo Inlet

  Having trouble installing an IAG Air Oil Separator with Aftermarket Turbo Inlet?
  Some aftermarket turbo inlets do not include a port for the blow by sensor and it just leaves the sensor to sit out in the open not connected.
  
  So you may be asking, "What do I do with the third port on the IAG AOS install in this case?"
  
  Answer:
  Some aftermarket intakes (AMR, etc.) will require the addition of a breather port for proper functionality of the IAG AOS. We suggest either welding a fitting on, or drilling and tapping a fitting into the inlet in order to complete the installation properly.
  
  
  
  

• Question Answer AOS - Which AOS is right for my vehicle?

  The Street Series AOS maintains or improves the functionality of the original PCV system and may be installed on street driven vehicles subject to EPA emissions standards. The Street Series AOS provides optimal oil separation and venting performance for vehicles, including unregulated competition applications, up to 600 WHP and those fueled by E85 or other high-ethanol fuel blends. The Street Series AOS protects from ethanol caused oil dilution and resulting extremely frequent oil change requirements. Pulling vacuum via the Street Series recirculating design to the inlet is ideal for ethanol fueled competition vehicles, removing ethanol vapors from the crankcase and returning them to the intake system for complete combustion. Please note that the IAG AOS is not compatible with most aftermarket strut tower bars.
  
  Competition Series AOS are “Competition Only” components for installation exclusively on “Competition” vehicles or “Racing” vehicles not subject to pollution control. IAG recommends the Competition Series AOS for Competition vehicles with greater than 600 WHP output. The Competition Series AOS prevents any oil suspended in the PCV gases from re-entering the turbo inlet but requires calibration or tune changes. Select a Street Series AOS if you prefer not to retune your Competition vehicle for this upgrade. For Competition vehicles, follow your engine builder’s maintenance directions, but perform oil changes before every race or practice event .
  
  IAG is not offering any Competition only components for installation on street driven or regulated applications. Installing a Competition Series AOS on a vehicle other than a Competition vehicle used solely for competition motorsport may be violation of the federal prohibitions against “Tampering” provided in CAA§ 203(a)(3)(A), 42 U.S.C. § 7522(a)(3)(A), 40 C.F. R. § 1068.101(b)(I) and “Defeat Devices” in CAA§ 203(a)(3)(B), 42 U.S.C. § 7522(a)(3)(B), 40 C.F.R. § 1068.101(b)(2).
  
  

• Question Answer AOS - Why do I have extra parts after completing the V2 AOS install?

  The IAG Air Oil Separator kits are packaged in such a way that they fit multiple models and years even though the part number remains the same. Not every model or year uses the same parts that are packaged. This means that after you complete an install, it is likely you will have parts remaining that were intended for a different model or year vehicle.
  
  Why does IAG choose to package it this way?
  Very simply, IAG and their distribution network can stock AOS's that will fit a broader range of models, using less shelf space and less overall capital.
  
  About IAG AOS Part Numbers:
  IAG has a total of six base AOS part numbers. All of the AOS kits start with the same base can, top, bottom and back bracket. From there, an AOS can be made either as a Competition or Street Series depending on the top breather fitting installed. Once the breather fitting is determined the kits are assembled for the specific chassis and engine.

  About AOS Mounting Brackets:
  The IAG-ENG-7800 brackets are for the 2004-07 GD vehicles and the IAG-ENG-7801 brackets are for the 2008-18 GR and VA Chassis. IAG stopped including both brackets in our packages to reduce cost and reduce confusion as the second bracket would simply be thrown out if not needed.
  
  
  

• Question Answer AOS - Why does my V2 AOS look different than what is advertised on the site?

  Our AOS has gone through a series of revisions that often outpaces our instructions or advertising. The biggest change in the last few years was our revised bracket design for the Competition and Street Series as well as adding a new PCV valve design to the Street Series Air Oil Separator.
  
  Our original AOS bracket included metal spacers that located the AOS slightly away from the strut tower. The latest AOS’s comes with brackets that are designed to flush mount on the strut tower and in some cases also lower the AOS mounting position. Redesigning the bracket offered clearance advantages for customers with various types of aftermarket intercoolers. If you are running an older V1 AOS we do sell the latest V2 brackets separately which can be used to update a V1.
  
  Our original V1 and Early V2 Street Series AOS’s used a metal PCV valve located on the upper breather. Some clients complained of a noise the valve would create as it functions on and off vacuum with the engine. The solution was a revised upper breather line that integrates a plastic PCV valve into the hose and a new fitting which screws into the upper breather.
  
  
  

• Question Answer AOS - Why does IAG require an air oil separator or a catch can on their built motors?

  Engines built with aftermarket components are generally assembled with the goal of handling a great deal more power than their OEM counterparts. The tolerances used along with the additional power output can equal more oil vapor making its way into the intake tract. It is imperative to prevent this vaper from entering the combustion chamber to prevent detonation thus prolonging the life of the engine.

• Question Answer AOS - What AOS do I need for my EJ207 swap?

  While every swap may vary slightly most of our customers have had luck with using the AOS that is specified for their particular chassis. Please keep in mind that some modification may be necessary to the hose routing in order for the system to work properly.

Cylinder Head Product Questions

• Question Answer Cylinder Heads - How do I know what head castings I have?

  Subaru cylinder heads are identified by an alphanumeric code cast into the side of every head. The code features a letter and two numbers. WRX and STI EJ25 cylinder heads have four letter codes (B, V, W, D) identifying the year and type of vehicle. The codes will appear as B25, V25, W25 and D25.

Engine Product Questions

• Question Answer Engine - Can I add ARP Case Bolts to an IAG Short Block or Case once it is built or machined?

  No!
  Adding ARP case bolts to an IAG Short Block or IAG Case Half Set after it is machined and built to spec originally with OEM case bolts will cause case distortion and reduce the longevity of the engine. ARP case bolts require line honing the case and this process can only occur during the build/manufacturing process. If you want to upgrade an already assembled short block or machined case half set that was originally spec’d to OEM case bolts to ARP case bolts, it will require disassembly, line honing the case and new bearings at a minimum.
  

• Question Answer Engine - Can I use IAG EJ25 Short Blocks with 2002-05 Subaru WRX's

  The IAG EJ25 short blocks will work with your 2002-2005 Subaru WRX but it will require modifications and tuning. You would need to build what's referred to as a hybrid engine for you to be able to use our Staged 2.5L short block.

  We do offer your choice of hybrid pistons from JE or we can CNC combustion match for your 2.0L heads depending on which way you wanted to go on a hybrid build. One or the other will need to be done to get the compression ratio right.
  
  
  

• Question Answer Engine - What break-in oil do I use for my new block?

  Please read our Short Block and Long Block Install Documentation thoroughly before doing anything with your vehicle and new engine. This link includes the detailed break-in procedure. You can find that here, Warranty Document
  
  For the FA20 we recommend Motul Break-In Oil (Preferred), Royal Purple Break-In, Brad Penn Break-In.
  
  Run any Conventional 5w30 Oil and OEM or Purolator Pureone filter for the first 50 miles.
  Change oil to Break-In Oil at 50 miles (as highlighted above), and replace oil filter and crush washer.
  Change oil with Break-In Oil at 500 miles on your new engine, and replace oil filter and crush washer.
  Change oil with Break-In Oil at 1500 miles and replace oil filter and crush washer.
  FA20DIT WRX change oil at 3000 to Motul 5w30 8100 X-clean EFE and replace oil filter and crush washer.
  FA20 BRZ / FR-S / GT86 change oil at 3000 to Motul 0w20 8100 Eco-lite and replace oil filter and crush washer.
  
  
  For the EJ25 we recommend Motul Break-In Oil (Preferred), Royal Purple Break-In, Brad Penn Break-In.

• Question Answer Engine - What head gaskets do you recommend for a Hybrid EJ25 Short Block with 2.0L EJ20 heads?

  If you are using our IAG EJ25 Closed Deck short block with 2.0L heads that feature the combustion mod you should use the .039” JE Proseal Gaskets.
  
  If you are using a short block with Stock style case halves (Semi-open deck) you can use OE head gaskets as long as the 2.0L heads have combustion chamber work done to properly lower the compression ratio.
  
  
  

• Question Answer Engine - What type of oil should I run after break-in?

  After completing the full break-in procedure:
  
  For EJ25 we recommend Motul 5w40 8100 X-cess Synthetic (Pump Gas) and change oil and filter every 2500-3000 miles. If running E85 or Race Gas use Motul 10w40 6100 Synergie+ or Motul 300V.
  
  For FA20 we recommend Motul 5w40 8100 X-cess Synthetic (Pump Gas) and change oil and filter every 2500-3000 miles. If running E85 or Race Gas use Motul 10w40 6100 Synergie+ or Motul 300V.
  
  
  
  

• Question Answer Engine - When using ARP case bolts with an IAG case half set should I follow the ARP torque specs?

  No!
  IAG installs ARP CASE BOLTS with 30W engine oil using OEM SUBARU torque specs and procedures. Other torque specs and lubricants may lead to case distortion damage. If you purchased an IAG case half set or short block that was originally manufactured with OEM case bolts, IAG recommends line honing the case when using ARP Case Bolts to remove any distortion created by the hardware.

• Question Answer Exhaust - Why should I go with equal length headers?

  To put it simply. Efficiency. Equal length headers are more efficient as the exhaust gases do not have to fight each other before making their way into the up-pipe. A more efficient engine = more power and reliability.

• Question Answer Fueling - I want to buy your side feed to top feed conversion rails, but I don't see any fuel lines for my car. What do I need?

  If you choose to use our conversion rails you will be able to run any of the fuel line kits we offer for the 2007-20 STI and 2002-14 WRX.

• Question Answer Fueling - What do I need to convert from side feed injectors to top feed injectors?

  Side feed to top feed conversions can be done two ways:
  

  • The first way is to run our side feed to top feed injector conversion rails (Part# IAG-AFD-2132). This is the simplest way to do the conversion.
  • The other way is to change to the appropriate top feed TGV set, top feed fuel rails and custom lines. For the 2004-06 STI and 2004-05 Forester XT you can use the following part numbers

• Question Answer Fueling - What size fuel injectors do I need?

  This is one of the most common questions when starting a build and the great news is there is not any reason to guess as the injector size will be dictated solely by the power you want to make and the fuel you want to run. There are several great fuel injector calculators out there.

  Please keep in mind that there are many other factors involved in choosing an injector (brand, orientation, fuel pressure, lines, rails, pump, FPR, tuning requirements) so the online calculators should only be used as a starting point. • Question Answer Fueling - Can I run E85 in the IAG braided fuel line kits?

  We recommend our PTFE line kits for any setups that will be running E85 or Race gas. While our braided line kits are a step up from the OEM fuel lines they are not rated for use with ethanol or race gas.

  
  
• Question Answer Fueling - Why should I use PTFE line when running E85 flex fuel or race gas?

  The PTFE coating on the line prevents fumes from making their way out of the lines and into the engine bay. Ethanol molecules are much smaller than gasoline which can allow them to permeate the hose.

• Question Answer Product Support - Why are my anodized parts (Fuel rails, TGVs, caps, etc) different shades, or look different from the pictures online?

  Anodizing is a coating process with many variables which can affect thickness and color. While all care is taken to achieve the best consistency possible, batches of anodized components rarely match exactly. Here is a list of variables which can affect the final color of anodized components:
  
  

  • Anodic Coating thickness
  • Tin vs. Cobalt-based 2-step anodizing processes
  • Dye used, saturation vs unsaturated anodizing processes
  • Coil vs. batch anodizing processes
  • Type of solutions used. For example, different 2-step solutions.
  • The temperature of all solutions
  • Concentration of solutions
  • Type of etch used
  • Time in each process
  • Size of the load (sqft per load)
  • Racking method (square inches of actual current-carrying racking area).
  • Current density variation caused by part configuration, causing voids and shielded areas in the finish.
  • Differences in aluminum alloys
  • The shape of the product to be coated.

  
  
  As you can see, the number of variables that can be introduced in one batch of anodized components can be astronomical. For this reason, IAG does not guarantee color consistency of anodized products. We do, however, make every attempt to match the color of like products whenever possible.
  
  

• Question Answer Product Support - Why does my anodized IAG part have small parts of missing anodizing?

  When anodizing an aluminum part, the anodizing coats best on flat surfaces. When dealing with complex shapes, or tight corners, the anodized coating may not adhere properly and a bare spot will be seen. Typically, these will be smaller than a millimeter and not noticeable unless you look very closely. IAG cannot guarantee that your part will be free of any bare spots, but we do inspect each part for consistency and reject any that do not meet our standards.

• Question Answer Shipping - Can you ship internationally?

  We can ship internationally and would be happy to do so. The process is a little different than just a general website order. We do not accept Paypal or international credit cards. Wire transfer is the only option for international sales.

  Depending on product availability sometimes items will ship directly from the manufacturer. Please send an email to support@iagperformance.com with your order # and one of our customer service reps will be more than happy to provide you with the details.

Shopping Cart Support Questions

• Question Answer Shopping Cart - I'm receiving an AVS Mismatch during checkout. What do I do?

  An AVS mismatch is when the billing address provided during checkout does not match the shipping address for your order. To resolve this issue, be sure the shipping address you have provided at checkout matches the billing address for your credit card account. If you have recently moved or your address does not match due to an error, you can contact your bank to change the address. This process normally takes 1-2 business days to update. If you need the item to be shipped to a different address but the credit card's billing address is the same you will need to process the order via wire transfer.
  
  If the transaction fails after this error, the funds may still be reserved through your bank. Although they have not been debited from your account they will appear to be held until the bank verifies the transaction had not been completed. This hold can last anywhere from 2-7 business days depending on your bank. Once the reserve time is up, the funds will appear in your account again.
  
  If you are receiving this error with the correct address and your billing address includes two sets of numbers (example: 12 7th St) You will need to spell out the second set of numbers. (example: 12 Seventh St). The system only registers any numbers as the initial house number.
